Is it really necessary to have a water softener?

Updated: Sep 30, 2020

There are minerals in water that make water 'harder'. Minerals like Calcium and Magnesium. Hard water is high in dissolved minerals. When this hard water is heated, solid deposits of calcium carbonate can be formed.

What is bad about hard water?

Hard water is not so bad for you, but it could increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, if the amount of calcium and magnesium is really high. High blood pressure and heart disease could be caused by drinking hard water.

Hard water can result in deposits of calcium carbonate, calcium suplhate and magnesium hydroxide. This can get attached to the inside of pipes and boilers, which can cause lower water flows and less efficient heating.

What is good about hard water?

Hard water contains essential minerals. This makes hard water better to drink than soft water. Also because of the flavor; hard water tastes better. Soft water tastes a little bit more salty.

How does a water softener work?

It is a appliance that removes calcium and magnesium. Resin beads inside a softener trap the magnesium and calcium and exchange them for sodium or potassium. This causes the slightly salty taste.

When the water passes through the beads, the resulting chloride solution becomes a separate stream and goes down the drain, into the environment.

Do we need a water softener?

There are a couple of signs of hard water in your home. For example, white scaling on faucets, soap scum on tubs and sinks, mineral residue on dishes.

There are tests to do. You can use a test kit that is available on Amazon, like showed below or an independent laboratory. You can search for labs at Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program. If you get water from a community water system, you can contact them and ask for information about the hardness of the water.

If the hardness of your water is higher than 7 grains per gallon, or 120mg/L, than you might need a water softener.
